Paul Brown began his career with the Department of Sanitation in 1999 at the Manhattan 9 garage, which serves West Harlem. On the job for less than two years when the 9/11 attacks happened, he was one of the sanitation workers tasked with clearing debris and material from lower Manhattan. Mr. Brown is now the three-star chief in charge of Sanitation’s Personnel Management Division.

Mr. Brown’s interview recalls his experiences working at Ground Zero, the work of clearing debris, and the particular challenges he encountered when removing massive quantities of food waste from restaurants devastated by the attacks.
